Southern Counties Staffordshire Bull Terrier Society

RESULTS OF THE

SOCIETY OPEN SHOW

Held on Sunday 12th June 2022

at

Bletchingley Village Hall

Bletchingley, Surrey

A very enjoyable show at a very light and airy venue. The show attracted a decent entry for the two judges and we were also joined by a good number of spectators which made for a good atmosphere and a warm reception of the judges decisions. On speaking to both Clare & Kaine after the event both informed us that they had a very enjoyable day and thanked the Society for their respective appointments and hospitality. Although as a Society we only have a small committee who work hard to make the show a success we are also lucky and would like to thank the small band of helpers who always come along and help. We would also like to thank our sponsors Primal Raw for their continued support and also to those individuals that sponsored the Best Of and Class Rosettes. We are now planning the Society's Championship Show for November, so any offers of rosette sponsorship or special prizes would be gratefully accepted.

Judge: Mrs. Clare Robinson-Cox (Hamason)

My thanks to the Officers and Committee for inviting me to judge their Open Show and for the very warm welcome we received. The ring was of good size and the venue was very well lit, light and airy with good ventilation – essential as it was a warm day. My two ring stewards, Kim & Faye, did a great job in helping the day to run smoothly – thank you. I had a lovely entry of dogs to assess, and I would like to thank all exhibitors for giving me the opportunity to judge your dogs and for accepting my decisions sportingly. A general observation from the day, dogs (and bitches) seemed to be separating into two distinct camps – either too big (well over 16 inches in some cases but having the bone and substance to match that height) or a little lacking in bone and substance, though in these specimens height is within the 14-16 inches desired. For me a Stafford (dog or bitch) should have the strength and power I saw in the larger specimens but still have that packaged in a 14-16 inch frame. We need to be aware of becoming complacent with the “lift” and “daylight underneath” I hear bandied about so often and forgetting about the “great strength for his size” that is actually written in the Breed Standard. Having said that, I was very pleased with all of my main winners today.

BEST BITCH, BEST IN SHOW

& BEST PUPPY IN SHOW

Mr. J & Mrs. S Hammond

"HAMMYSTAFF LOVE BOMB" JW

White and red pied bitch with beautiful dark eyes, neatly set and carried ears and a super expression. She has a lovely skull to muzzle ratio, with good strength and no exaggeration. She is clean-lipped and has a correct scissor bite and cheek bumps developing nicely. She has a strong neck leading to a wide, straight front with good bone and forechest and lovely neat feet. She has a great spring of rib already and a good depth of brisket. She is short-coupled and has a lovely level topline that she holds perfectly on the move. She still has that “puppyness” about her, but that’s exactly what I expect with a puppy – not to be overdone with fitness at a young age. She moved very well which won her this class today. Overall, she was the one for me today – fitting the breed standard more closely than anything I had my hands on in every department. So pleased to award her BEST BITCH, BEST PUPPY BITCH, BEST IN SHOW & BEST PUPPY IN SHOW – well done.

RESERVE BEST BITCH & RESERVE BEST IN SHOW

Miss P Benfield

"ROWENDA LADY DEMELZA"

Black brindle bitch with a strong head, a good skull to muzzle ratio, good cheek bumps, no excess of fleshiness, clean-lipped and correct scissor bite. She has neat ears and a wide chest and straight front with neat feet. She has good bone and a great spring of rib and depth of brisket. She moved and was handled well and was presented in great coat and physical condition. She has definitely matured since I last judged her, though I would not want to see her any “fitter” or conditioned as her overall balance and outline may not benefit from it. A beautiful bitch who I am sure has much more to come. Pleased to award her RESERVE BEST BITCH and RESERVE BEST IN SHOW.

BEST DOG & BEST OPPOSITE SEX IN SHOW

Mr. B Boggins & Miss C Burton

"LUTHAIS LOCH TAY JW"

A stunning black brindle dog with a lovely expression and the darkest of eyes. Neat, well-placed and carried ears. A very good skull to muzzle ratio with good cheek bumps and a correct bite. Clean-faced and strong without being overdone in any way. Good bone, decent width of chest and a straight front. Very neat feet, short, black nails. Good forechest and depth of brisket with a pleasing spring of rib and lightness in loin. A lovely compact dog who moved very well with a correct set on and carriage of his tail. Presented in very good physical and coat condition. Very pleased to award him BEST DOG and BEST OPPOSITE SEX IN SHOW.

BEST OPPOSITE SEX PUPPY IN SHOW

Mrs. S & Miss N Clark

"ROWLESTAFF EASY TIGER"

Brindle dog with a good skull to muzzle ratio. He has neat ears and a correct bite. He has sufficient bone with a decent depth of brisket and spring of rib for a youngster. He had a level topline which he held standing and on the move. He had lovely neat feet and good pigmentation, having black nails, though I would have preferred a slightly darker eye. He is just starting to develop his muscle tone and moved OK fore and aft once he was settled.

BEST PUPPY DOG & BEST OPPOSITE SEX PUPPY IN SHOW.

BEST VETERAN IN SHOW

Mr. R O'Sullivan

"HAMMYSTAFF LUCKY LOTTIE"

A beautiful white and red pied bitch with the darkest of eyes. She has a good skull to muzzle ratio and a correct scissor bite with neat ears and a lovely keen expression. She has good bone with a straight, wide front. A strong neck and pleasing spring of rib and depth of brisket. She has a level topline held on the move and when stacked. She won this class on movement today – easily the best mover. Very pleased to award her BEST VETERAN BITCH and BEST VETERAN IN SHOW.

BEST OPPOSITE SEX VETERAN IN SHOW

Miss V Mitchell

"OUR LITTLE CRACKER"

Blue brindle top-sized dog with a good skull to muzzle ratio. He has lovely, neat ears and a pleasing expression. He has plenty of bone and a straight front. He has a good spring of rib and the required lightness of loin. He was presented in very good physical condition and moved OK. BEST VETERAN DOG & BEST OPPOSITE SEX VETERAN IN SHOW.

VETERAN DOG 2 (1A)

1: Mitchell’s OUR LITTLE CRACKER 23.10.2013 (Kenmilquin Steel Blade x Rezavoire Lady Of Hampshire). See above

MINOR PUPPY DOG 2 (0A)

1: Clark’s ROWELLSTAFF EASY TIGER 09.10.2021 (Rowellstaff Ooh Aar Cantona x Rowellstaff Tiger Toes). See above

2: Kirk’s KIRSTAFF THE FIRST AVENGER 21.10.2021 (CH Biggleswick Splash Of Ginge x Jodanzac Fireball Red). A top-sized red dog with a good skull to muzzle ratio and correct bite. He has lovely neat ears, being well-placed and carried correctly giving him a very engaging expression. He is well off for bone and I am sure he will do very well as he matures, having reached his height before his width comes to give him the overall balance I found in my first placed today. He has lovely black nails, though his feet could be neater. He moved well in both directions and held his topline on the move.

PUPPY DOG 0

JUNIOR DOG 2 (0A)1: Raynsford & Stevens’ RAYNSTAFF OLD FASHIONED 09.06.2021 (Elitebull Leo x Raynstaff Dark And Stormy). A beautifully compact black brindle dog who has a lovely skull to muzzle ratio, clean-faced, correct bite and dark eyes and eye rims giving him a stunning expression enhanced by his neatly carried ears. He has good bone and a straight front with nice, neat feet. He has a level topline, stacked and on the move. He has a good spring of rib and a pleasing lightness in his loins. He moved well with power and drive and was shown in lovely physical and coat condition. He carried his tail a little high but he is a young dog, only just out of Puppy Class, and I am sure this will settle as he matures. Very smart dog, pushed hard for top honours today.

2: O’Sullivan’s JUNOSTAFF BIG MAN 01.06.2021 (Jodel’s Fernando x Leebee’s Luscious). Another top- sized red dog with a black mask and a lovely expression. He had a good skull to muzzle ratio though I was unable to assess his dentition as he was a little unsettled today. He has a wide chest and good bone, a straight front and lovely black nails, though his feet could be neater. He moved OK. His coat was not in as good condition nor was he as compact standard dog as my 1st placed today.

YEARLING DOG 4 (1A)

1: Boggins & Burton’s LUTHAIS LOCH TAY JW 01.10.2020 (CH Rochlawie Behold The Hour JW x Luthais Ballerina Bella). See above

2: Clark & Otizo’s POWERPACK LACHLAN DORIN JW 28.07.2020 (Powerpack Tam O’Shanter x Powerpack Alura Finvarra). A dog that I have judged before and can see that he is maturing nicely. Black brindle with white toes and flash on chest. He was presented in very fit condition, which was lovely to see. He has a correct bite and lovely strength in his head though I just preferred the overall proportions in head of my 1st placed today. He has a good width of chest and depth of brisket with neat feet and black toe nails. He has sufficient bone and rib and he moved OK though his tail was carried a little higher than I would like.

3: Knight’s KALOSTAFFS DARK KNIGHT 08.12.2020 (Alport Hallo Man x Blue Phantom Shadow At Kalostaff). Another dog that I have judged before as a puppy and developing well. Black brindle with white and a larger-framed dog all over than 1st or 2nd today but he has good bone and balance nonetheless. He has a decent skull to muzzle ratio with a correct scissor bite. He has a straight front and sufficient rib development. He moved well and was presented in lovely coat and physical condition.

NOVICE DOG 1 (1A)

POST GRAD DOG 2 (0A)

1: Nolan’s CHISWELSTAFF I AM LEGEND 09.01.2020 (Chiswelstaff Déjà vu x Chiswelstaff China Girl). A black brindle compact dog with a good skull to muzzle ratio and correct scissor bite. He has dark eyes and neat ears giving him a pleasing expression. He has good bone and a decent front with neat, tidy feet. He is short-coupled with a level topline and moved well.

2: Hammond’s HAMMYSTAFF RED REVENGE JW 23.11.2020 (Magicgem Invictus x Hammystaff Scarlet Witch). A red dog with a black mask and pigmentation throughout that is just perfect. He has lovely dark eyes and a great skull to muzzle ratio, neat ears and a keen alert expression. He has good bone and neat feet and a good width of chest and straight front. Another dog I have judged before but he was just having none of it today and I was unable to assess him other than by eye. He did not settle on the move, even with a 2nd attempt, though there was no suggestion of lameness or poor movement – he just did not want to be there today unfortunately.

LIMIT DOG 4 (1A)

1: Wise’s MONTGOMERY GUARD 05.07.2018 (CH Satip Sorboss At Vrarbull x Labyrinths Princess). A compact black brindle dog with a good skull to muzzle ratio and correct scissor bite. He has a strong, thick neck without stuffiness leading to a straight front and good width of chest. He has lovely neat feet with black nails. He is short-coupled with a level topline and moved very well with a correctly carried tail. I preferred his fitness when I judged him last as he did not seem as light in the loin today, though as it was a warm day, he may have re-hydrated more than last time.

2: Mann’s BIGGLESWICK IT’S MY LIFE 25.02.2019 (Garforth King x Biggleswick Ice Maiden). A strongly built black brindle and white dog who pushed very hard for 1st place today. He has a lovely head shape with a good skull to muzzle ratio. He has plenty of bone and a correct scissor bite. He has a wide straight front with a good forechest and depth of brisket. He has a good spring of rib, is short-coupled and has a decent topline. He has a good bend of stifle and good muscle development. Just beaten by 1st placed today who’s movement was more settled and tail carriage was slightly better.

3: Mitchell’s CHEDANSTAFF DEVIL STAR 03.09.2018 (CH Rubericla Black Starscream x She’s A Rockstar At Chedanstaff)

OPEN DOG 6 (2A)

1: Norris’s LABRASTAF MAGMA AT HAIDASTAFF 14.09.2019 (Ballindona Roger The Dodger x Ballindona Fab’U’Luss For Labrastaf). A mahogany brindle dog with a lovely expression and a good skull to muzzle ratio. He has neat ears and a good bite. He has a strong neck and a straight, wide front with a good spring of rib and depth of brisket. He is a compact dog with a pleasing lightness to his loins, short- coupled and level topline. He has neat feet with dark nails and moved well in both directions. Pleased to award him RESERVE BEST DOG, just preferring the cleaner face and muzzle of my BEST DOG today.

2: See 1st LIMIT DOG

3: Pocknell’s ASHSTOCK HIGHLAND WARRIOR AT BLUNOOSA 16.07.2017 (CH Ashstock By Jupiter x Pridestaffs Happy Feet At Ashstock (IMP DEU)). Red dog with black mask with a lovely head shape and pleasing expression. A larger-framed dog all over than 1st or 2nd today but he was balanced nonetheless. He had good bone and a straight front and held his level topline while standing and on the move, which he did with ease. Preferred the neater feet on 1 & 2 today.

1: O’Sullivan’s HAMMYSTAFF LUCKY LOTTIE 13.05.2015 (CH Kronsaters Lycktraff x Hammystaff Haniel). See above

She has a decent front with a good spring of rib and depth of brisket. She has good bone and neat feet with dark nails and is short-coupled. She did not move the best today but at 12 years old she still seemed to be enjoying her day.

3: Moore’s SHE’S A ROCKSTAR AT CHEDANSTAFF 05.10.2014 (Lillys Cracker Blue Boy x Blue O Hara). A top-sized blue brindle bitch who was presented in great coat and physical condition. She has good bone with a good spring of rib and depth of brisket, decent head shape and nice, neat ears. Another who did not move at her best today but she was quite clearly loving every minute of being in the ring. Just preferred the more compact, standard outline of my 2nd placed today.

She has a good skull to muzzle ratio with darkish eyes and neat ears. She has a wide, straight front with a good spring of rib and depth of brisket. Special Awards Classes

Judge. Mr. Kaine Davis (Sharmara)

Many thanks to the club for inviting me to judge the Special Award Classes at the show, I was made feel very welcome by all the committee members and officers of the society. I thoroughly enjoyed my time judging and I had a lovely selection of dogs to go over. My opinion is just that and I am sure that places will change throughout the year. Some dogs lost out purely down to me not being able to assess confirmation and movement. The atmosphere around the ring was great and everyone seemed to take my decisions sportingly. Thank you to my two stewards Gina Jones and Charlotte Burton for keeping everything running smoothly throughout my time judging, I really appreciated it.
